First Elk in the books for two!

After not drawing deer tags this year for Wyoming, Cody and Kevin decided to throw their luck at leftover cow elk tags. Neither have hunted elk before but knew they were around on the property in Wyoming, and a trip out there is always a great time regardless of what is being pursued.

We allocated a full week to chasing cow elk in the 80+ degree uncommonly warm Wyoming weather. We spent the first day glassing and listening for elk and were able to locate multiple small groups of bulls, but really nothing for cows. Second day we hiked into some harsher terrain where we have seen the elk and Kevin was able to connect on a large cow, exactly one week after his 62nd birthday. What an awesome gift! If we had bull tags he may have gone home with a trophy of a lifetime, as a huge 6x6 bull was with the cow and managed to be within range for multiple minutes. Thankfully we were able to get the elk off the mountain with the help of an off road jeep and some expert driving from our host Rod, instead of having to quarter and pack it out.

The following day after seeing a cow, but unable to get a shot first thing in the morning, we posted up where she ran off, hoping near dusk she would come back through the area. She did, and I was able to connect on my first cow elk and fortunately in a place we were able to drive our pick-up right to it, again a nice and easy recovery!

Overall the trip was a bigger success than we ever could've expected, we went out not assuming any elk would be around and just hoping for some luck. We ended up seeing more bulls than cows, both filling our first ever elk tags and are looking forward to a eventual bull hunt! Going home with hundreds of pounds of some of the best meat on earth is exciting and we cannot wait to try it and share it with friends and family!

Also huge shout out to Bubba for coming along without a tag and photographing, videoing and helping out with the hunt! He being out there last year and harvesting a Mule deer and a pronghorn was greatly helpful in being able to comfortably know the landscape.
